We’ve all seen the stereotypes of what therapy looks like, but could it be more than that? More and more people are becoming familiar with the therapeutic space, and I think the flexibility of what it could be helps.
If this is your first time, or you’re still relatively new, I’d like to share with you a simplified version of what individual counseling could look like.
What is Individual Counseling?
Let’s start off with the basic definition:
Individual counseling is a collaborative process between you and a trained professional designed to help you navigate life’s challenges and improve your mental and emotional well-being.
In a safe and confidential environment, you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with the goal of understanding yourself better, managing difficulties, and achieving personal growth.
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for you to feel comfortable and at ease. This may take some time, and that’s absolutely normal. I’m here to meet you at your pace.
What Do I Do as a Counselor?
As a counselor, my role is to provide a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can freely express yourself. I actively listen to your concerns, help you identify patterns in your thoughts and behaviors, and guide you toward developing healthier coping mechanisms.
Sometimes, I will challenge you. (Don’t worry, I’ve been told I’m gentle.) But the challenge is often necessary, and allows to make space for new perspectives. It’s true that comfort is familiar, however, stagnation also thrives there.
Together, we work to uncover the root causes of your challenges and create a plan to address them, all while empowering you to make positive changes in your life.
What Do My Individual Counseling Sessions Look Like?
While the idea of reaching out for help may be relieving, starting sessions can be stressful. Sometimes, trying to figure out where to even begin is overwhelming, but don’t fret – that’s why I’m here.
Each counseling session is structured around your unique needs and goals. During our sessions, we’ll discuss the issues that are most pressing for you, explore any underlying emotions, and work on practical strategies to help you manage your concerns.
There will be threads of themes and topics that will come up.
Counseling sessions can be focused around finding solutions and habit-building to restructure your routines and creating a path to a more harmonious life. They can also include identifying negative thought patterns or core beliefs that influence your perception.
Signs That You Might Benefit From Individual Counseling
There can be a multitude of reasons why seeking counseling might cross your mind. It’s not always as obvious as an unexpected crisis. It could be a lingering feeling that you can’t articulate, or the fact that someone close to you suggested it out of care.
All reasons, whatever they may be, are valid.
Some common reasons that individuals reach out to me include:
- Feeling overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or depression.
- Experiencing difficulties in your personal relationships.
- Struggling with adjusting to major life changes or transitions.
- Finding yourself stuck in negative thought patterns or behaviors.
- Dealing with low self-esteem or a lack of confidence.
- Wanting to explore past experiences and how they affect your current life.
- Searching for better ways to manage emotions and responses.
But know that it can be anything that’s keeping you an unease. We can talk about it.
How Can Counseling Help?
Reading through this list of benefits may sound nice, but counseling actually requires a lot of work on your end. Much of this work is done outside of the session, and processes can be different person to person.
My aim is to provide you with the tools and support to:
- Improve your emotional regulation and mental clarity.
- Enhance your coping strategies for stress and anxiety.
- Strengthen your relationships and communication skills.
- Gain deeper self-awareness and understanding.
- Navigate life transitions with greater ease and confidence.
- Break free from negative patterns and develop healthier habits.
- Foster personal growth and improve overall life satisfaction.
Techniques I Use
In our sessions, I draw on a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to best support your needs.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress. By challenging and reframing these thoughts, we work together to foster healthier mental habits.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT helps you accept difficult emotions and thoughts rather than fighting them. Through mindfulness and commitment to personal values, we aim to create a richer and more meaningful life.
- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT): SFBT is a goal-oriented approach that concentrates on identifying your strengths and resources, and using them to find practical solutions to your challenges. It emphasizes what is working well and how you can build on those successes.
Depending on where you are and how the therapeutic process is evolving, I often integrate elements that come from these modalities.
Session Details
- Length: Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes, allowing us ample time to explore your concerns and work on strategies for improvement.
- Format: All of my sessions are held online via Google Meet, providing you with the flexibility and comfort of attending from your own space.
- Frequency: Sessions are typically held once a week or every other week, depending on your needs and preferences. I often recommend that two weeks be the maximum time between sessions so we can keep a flow. We can adjust the frequency as you progress and your situation evolves.
- Cancellation: I ask for 24h notice for cancellation or rescheduling, as it allows me time to reorganize my schedule. I understand that life happens, and not everyone has access to a concrete routine, so please contact me as soon as you can to reschedule within the week.
